Venice is like no other city. It has 177 canals, 409 bridges and 117 small islands, with magnificent palaces. It is a city rich in museums and historical buildings of great artistic and cultural importance. The whole city is a unique sight in itself - there is nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world! Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi. It has been described as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Looking for a real treat? Then Venice is your destination!
Visit St Mark’s Square and see some of the famous bridges, including the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, and maybe take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal. The water bus (vaporetto) is the most amazing method of getting around. You will want to visit St Mark’s Basilica (completed about 1071), the Clock Tower, and the oldest church of San Giacometto (St James the Apostle), said to be founded in 421AD, as old as Venice itself. Another ‘must’ is a visit the Doge’s Palace and, if time permits, take a boat-trip to one or two of the nearby islands - maybe Murano, famous for glass-making.
Venice is currently celebrating 1,000 years as the world’s centre for master glass artisans. You may also want to visit the 500-year-old Rialto market, alive with fish, freshly caught, and fresh vegetables.
Your 4-star accommodation is in the convenient district of Mestre, on the mainland, literally just a few minutes across the causeway from the island where Venice sits. Your stay at the Hotel Tritone, or similar, includes a buffet breakfast each morning and one evening dinner, probably taken on the second day.
